KS2 Cycling Programme 2018/19

KS2 Cycling Programme 2018/19
We are pleased to announce that the Newcastle PE and School Sport Service will be working with Wingrove Primary to deliver a 6 week Cycling programme aimed to increase the skills, competence and confidence of the KS2 children taking part.

The sessions will be delivered at Wingrove Primary School on the new purpose built cycling track.  This fantastic facility has been designed so that children are able to progress and build on their cycling skills at their own speed with enough 'bumps' and 'turns' to enthuse and motivate them as they progress through the programme.

All equipment is supplied as part of the programme will be supplied – pedal bikes including staff bikes, helmets, gloves and waterproof jackets.  So there is no need to rely on children brining bikes and helmets.

Sessions will be delivered by a qualified cycling leader who has a vast experience of working with children in a educational setting.

Programme Outline:

The half-term block will consist of 2 hours per session.  The class will be split into 2 groups and will take part in:

  • First session – initial assessment to ascertain each child’s cycling abilities
  • Learners will be grouped based on ability and work on skills relevant to their competency
  • Sessions will cover a number of skills based activity; some of which will take place on Wingrove’s bespoke track, skills on the year and group rides

Sessions will also cover the following:

  •  Helmet & Clothing checks
  • Developing Technique and skills

  • Bike Handling

  • Gear Selection

  • Braking

  • Dismounting

  • Climbing & descending

These sessions will be also upskill staff as there is a requirement that teachers accompanying the children take part in the programme.
